A trip to a border security station in Texas “confirmed my worst fears,” Rep. Katherine Clark said. Clark documented a short trip to McAllen, Texas in a series of Facebook posts over the weekend.
Clark said she met a mother being detained who had no idea how to contact her son, who was sent to New York. She also said she saw children huddled on concrete floors under mylar blankets.
“The reality is we are imprisoning families that are coming to us for refuge and instead of helping we are retraumatizing them,” Clark wrote in a Saturday night Facebook post. “The Trump policy of tearing families apart has been replaced by plans for long term internment. No one I spoke with could articulate the plan to reunify families.”
Clark said she will go back to Washington next week “committed to reunifying these families and working towards immigration policies that eliminate the current chaos and treat people with dignity.” She capped the post with the hashtag.
